Back in 2008 I had the pleasure of meeting and photographing Esperanza Spalding at The Roots Picnic in Philadelphia. Not to mention catching her set and instantly becoming a huge fan. Although I am a little late, I wanted to say congratulations to Esperanza for taking home this years Grammy for Best New Artist. The award could not have gone to a more amazingly talented musician, or nicer person.

I didn't know Frankie well, although he was a pretty regular part of my days. Always a welcoming smirk and a handshake. The familiar face of my longtime bartender, neighbor, and friend, to sit and have a drink with after being away from the neighborhood for awhile.
Not well, but well enough...

On New Years Eve, Frankie Campagna took his own life at the age of 24.

Rest in the peace that I am so sorry you couldn't find here with us, buddy.

Here's to you Frankie 45. You will be missed.

There are certain things in life that are so full of pure pleasure, that they are almost surreal in the moment. Things that bring our minds, body, and consciousness to a point of truly experiencing a presence of euphoria. Amazing feelings of our senses completely taking over.

These moments, although they are not everything, can make life... oh, so damn good.

The deep sigh of release hearing an opponents hand slap the mat after sinking in a perfect triangle. Head To The Wall kicking in right as you are finishing up mile 5, and getting lost in the rhythm of your own breathing through the next 3 to come. At times, even the rush of satisfaction or attachment in creating a memorable photograph. The details of this list could go on and on...

The laughter of my nephews, perfect waves, the smile of a loved one, beautiful hikes, travels to new places, well crafted beers, good wine, amazing sex, great food.

I recently had the pleasure of meeting and photographing Chef Tre Wilcox at Loft 610. Tre, among MANY other accomplishments throughout his 19 year cooking career, was a favorite on Season 3 of Top Chef, and will also soon be seen again on the upcoming season of Top Chef All Stars, which begins airing December 1st on Bravo.

As a bit of a foodie myself, I must say that I was super excited for this particular assignment. After we finished shooting, I pulled up a seat at the bar, ordered a drink and settled in for, hands down, the BEST meal I have ever had.

6 courses, selected and presented by Tre himself. I died and went to heaven.

I couldn't help but attempt to capture the unexplainable palette of flavors and presentation that left me literally speechless.

Ignaz Gorischek is the VP of Store Development at Neiman Marcus, and for over 20 years has been designing and creating some of the most spectacular windows displays all over the country. On November 20th, Gorischeck and his crew will unveil this years Holiday Fantasy display at the Neiman Marcus flagship store in Downtown Dallas, Texas.

I will not ruin the surprise, but it is sure to be a head turner.

Last week I had the pleasure of attending the POST Blogger Social, hosted by Hello Splendor @ NEST in Dallas, TX. It was truly a great time. I got to hang out with some great friends, meet a lot of new folks, and check out some cool goods while having a cocktail. Nothing bad in that equation.
I must say that the post POST party was kinda awesome too! Good times all around.

Andy Irons, 3 time world surfing champion, died today at the age of 32 from complications due to illness.

Irons passed away during a layover at DFW en route to his home in Kauai, HI, after withdrawing from an event in Puerto Rico. He was a loved son, a devoted husband, and a soon-to-be father.

My good friend, colleague, and self-proclaimed (although laughably welcomed) "life coach" and I have been bumping heads on a few different things lately. As I spout off the most ridiculous examples to jokingly argue an opinion that, living your life like the captain of a sinking ship is completely justifiable in exchange for the simplest and few acts of civility and responsible behavior, she rolls her eyes at me and realizes the mighty feat that she has taken on.

At the very least, it has proven to be an entertaining way for us to pass time and keep things light hearted when we are on set together.

For the record, I do not actually believe that opinion with any seriousness. However, I am a firm believer that it is possible to walk a line between being a "responsible adult", and living your life without the amount of worries and restrictions (even if realistic) that are expected to come along with that. Within reason of course. Point being, there can be a balance. Of cautious and secure... as well as being able to throw those things to the wind at times.

Go about life playing it safe, fearing "what COULD happen",
or, take chances and find out for yourself...

Maybe as a single guy with no kids, or ties, and a job that allows me a certain level of freedom (...not to mention being a Sagittarius), it is easier for me to think that way. Truth be told, I would trade it all for reason enough not to.

Although I know that Heather sees my points buried behind the outrageous exaggerations in our humorous banter, she for some reason still can't get on board with certain things. After recently investing in my retirement, building my stock portfolio, taking care of my business responsibilities and handling other big boy stuff... I'm thinking that I deserve some personal reward. Only fair, right?

Fifty Three years ago today, Hunter S. Thompson wrote my favorite literary piece of all time.

The following is a letter to Kraig Juenger, a woman whom which Thompson had recently began a passionate affair with.

October 17, 1957

Eglin AFB

Fort Walton Beach, Florida

Dear Kraig,

For the second Monday night in succession, I find myself settling nervously into my chair at the Playground News sports desk, with absolutely nothing done for this week's edition, hundreds of stories to write- and beginning a letter to Kraig. Ah weakness: thy name is Hunter.

As you predicted, I found your letter when I arrived tonight. I've already read it three times and I'll probably chalk up number four in a matter of minutes. Between that pianist in Washington last weekend, your telephone call, and this letter, I'm going to play hell getting anything at all done either tonight or tomorrow.

And, on top of everything else, I talked to one of the "discharge honchos" today, and received the assurance that immediate steps would be taken to root me out of the ranks at once. My new technique- that of expounding at length on my religious and political beliefs- worked like a charm. When I'd finished, he concluded with this remark:

"I don't know exactly what it is about you, Thompson, and I didn't understand much of what you said; but I can see at a glance that there's not much sense in trying to make you either act or think like an airman should. I'll let you know within two days- twenty four hours, if possible- how soon you can be discharged".

And that's it in a nutshell. I don't know why I tend to make it sound humorous, because there's very little humor in it at all. It demonstrates, probably more clearly than any other single incident in my life- just how far I have strayed from the popular ideologies of our time. To go back- or to hesitate- would be unthinkable. And yet, in going on, I can see that I shall be permanently apart from all but a small and lonely percentage of the human race, in all but most superficial respects. But, after publicly embracing a philosophy to gain a desirable but admittedly superficial end, I could hardly live with myself for any length of time if I were to turn my back on that philosophy after it had served my purpose.

But I don't propose to bore you with this sort of thing at this stage of the game. It merely serves as a prelude to what I'm about to undertake- a short explanation of why there are "things I would like to say, but haven't".

In short, Kraig, I don't think that you really have any idea who Hunter S. Thompson is when he drops the role of court jester. And, for that reason, I'm afraid I'd be building you up for another fall if I were frank enough to tell you how I feel about you. I don't mean to say that I'm egotistical enough to believe that I have the power to make you feel one way or another about me. But on the other hand; if I were to attempt that, as I'd like to- and succeed- I'm not quite sure that either one of us would be any better off. And, rather than pursue any course of action which might eventually hurt you, I'd rather not do anything at all.
But let me tell you, before I leave this sombre subject, a little about myself: a very little- but enough.
First, I do not live from orgy to orgy, as I might have lead you to believe. I drink much less than most people think, and I think much more than most people would believe. I am quite sincere about some of the things which people take very lightly, and almost insultingly unconcerned about some of the things which people take most seriously. In short, I am basically antisocial: certainly not to an alarming degree, but just more so than I appear to be.
And finally, the more I try to explain myself, the more apparent it becomes that I'm not doing a very good job of it. That's why I wish, in a way, that we were not this far apart. It would be much easier to sit on a blanket on a beach and talk. I've always thought that letters were a very poor medium to convey any sort of serious meaning, and this effort only confirms my suspicions. I do it very rarely, and I'm not likely to try again for some time. I hope, even though I haven't done a very good job, that, if nothing else, I've gotten across to you that there's something more to old Cuubley than the part of him which shows above the water line.
But I think that anything else I can say on that subject would be useless. Despite anything I might say, the truth of the matter is that I think about you constantly. I need neither songs nor radios to remind me of last Thursday and Friday nights, and I can think of very few things I'd rather do than spend a long string of nights with you on that stretch of beach.
I think I've already said too much, but I hardly think that it surprised you at all. And then too, as long as I feel this way, it probably won't be very long until I drop in on you. But don't be afraid: it won't be for awhile, and I'll warn you beforehand- probably.
Don't let this letter get you down. I won't do it again; I promise. Hoping to see you soon, I remain, somewhat shaken, but still grinning... Hunty.

Hunter S. Thompson. The Proud Highway

After a long week, thus far, the weekend has been full of catching up on neglected chores, managing of responsibilities, finishing up work, and other attempts at being productive. But luckily, it has also consisted of some much welcomed indulgences.

Although it is not the ideal circumstances, I have to admit that I am thrilled to be able to still be excited about baseball in October. Obviously, I wish that I was sitting at a bar cheering for Boston, however, I am happy that I can at least stand behind my second "home team" throughout the playoffs.

I also now have double the reasons to hate the Yankees. Can there ever be enough?

Even with the disappointing ending to Game 1, it has been a lot of fun to enjoy the Texas openers of the ALCS with good friends.

In addition to some great baseball, I was also able to enjoy some equally satisfying food the past few days (peanuts and beer aside. although, also great). Last night I had some post game sicilian crust pizza at the Elbow Room in Dallas, TX. In my opinion, hands down, one of the best pizzas... anywhere. A must try if you are looking for a good place to grab a bite and a beer or two. After tonights victory, I continued my recent challenge of testing my own culinary abilities at home with a great white wine and a new amazing lamb recipe (my new favorite flavor. sorry baby lamb).
All while watching Stranger Than Fiction (one of my favorite movies). Sounds awesome, right?

It was.

"Sometimes, when we lose ourselves in fear, and despair, in routine, and constancy, in hopelessness, and tragedy... we can thank god for bavarian sugar cookies. And fortunately, when there aren't any cookies, we can still find reassurance in a familiar hand on our skin, or a kind and loving gesture, or a subtle encouragement, or a loving embrace, or an offer of comfort... not to mention, hospital gurneys, and nose plugs, an uneaten danish, and soft spoken secrets, and Fender Stratocasters, and maybe... the occasional piece of fiction".

To finish off the weekend, before getting into another crazy week, tomorrow I will be sitting down for Session 2 of my back piece with Mark Thompson. It has been a pretty intense month of tattooing for me. Between finishing old, and starting new pieces with Mike Lussier (check back to see shots of the hand pieces that we are doing in two weeks), as well as trying to get through my back with Mark as fast as possible, the process and frequency has been a beating! Probably not a routine I will ever try to tackle again. Its been a bit much, especially with the timing of it all.

With the help of my talented and gracious photographer friends, I have been photo/video documenting the process of this entire piece (from art conceptualizing, to completion). I will be editing together a short film of it when we are finished. Be sure to check back for it.

This sweatshirt has been my security blanket for about 10 years now. It has kept me warm by campfires, on the tops of mountains, from cool breezes on beaches, in snow storms, evening jogs, drives with the window down, even just sitting at home on the computer. It has been bled on, spilt on, sweat on, wiped on and dirtied far more times than most... and washed probably far fewer times than it should have been. It is the thing I dig for in my closet when I am sick, or tired, or just want to hide under a hood and a baggy layer of separation between me and the rest of the world... as well as what I search for when I am truly relaxed and at ease. In a way, it is often times a part of me.

A material piece of comfort.

In addition, this sweatshirt is a reminder of a very special place to me. Hawaii. One of the very few places I can honestly say I feel at home. With the exception of my actual home (when my days there are more than just visits limited by a timeline), one of the very few places that I feel I am able to allow myself to slow down. My mind, my stresses, my hangups, my days... myself. It is a beautiful place with an amazing power to make you let go and simply breath easier. Live easier. Something that is so hard to find words to describe. Unfortunately, also something that is too often so hard to do.

I can not wait to be back out there soon. I am anxiously counting down the days and looking forward to the warm Aloha of a lei from old friends, Thanksgiving dinner with new family, hiking my favorite trails, reggae playing on every station, morning coffee on the beaches of Kailua, falling asleep to the sounds of the island, and aimlessly staring out at the horizons for more hours than I will be able to keep track of.

Over the years I have always joked that, "I may not come back this time". Funny thing is, every time I say the words, they make more and more sense to me. Maybe some day, when the time is right, I can step away from it all and, as my friend Van says... enjoy the slow death of a severe case of island fever.

I dig where I live in Dallas. By no means is it the most polished neighborhood, nor does it fall in line with most of the other socially recognized areas of the city, but, it is what it is. Like with anything, you take the good with some bad...

It is urban, convenient, and has character. Quiet, with a mix of blue collar and creative work ethic during the day, and alive with an energetic, yet still subtle, pulse of culture, art and music at night. All the while maintaining an unassuming sense of community and loyalty to its patrons and residents. Not a bad vibe.

However, once a year, all of the above is consumed in the chaos of what we kindly refer to as the State Fair of Texas. Starting next weekend, that time of the year is once again among us. I can not deny that the accessibility of being right across the street from cold beer, deep fried almost anything, and the BEST people watching ever, is too much temptation to pass up maybe once or twice... but this Fair Park resident is glad that I will only be in town enough to have to tolerate a fraction of the spectacle.

The State Fair of Texas runs from September 24th through October 17th at Fair Park in Dallas, TX.

Stop by and clog your arteries with this years Fried Beer and Fried FRITOS Pie. I am sure to try both at least once.

Last night I had a chance to catch a screening of Social Network, directed by David Fincher (se7en, fight club). I highly recommend checking it out when it hits theaters on October 1st. It is really good!

I also recently went to see The American, directed by photographer, Anton Corbijn.
It was not as good as I was hoping (I also don't think it is as bad as most critics have judged), however, it is undeniably a visually beautiful setting for illustrating Martin Booth's novel, A Very Private Gentleman.

Movie aside, the poster is a classic.

Although different in style, the simple aesthetics and tones are very reminiscent to some of the old Blue Note album covers. Some of my favorite representations of graphic design. I love it.

The memory that I have of Shawn is a simple one...
It was a 2 minute walk from my parents house to the basketball court I grew up on. Summer days, weekends, after school until the sun went down. I remember the games, the players, the crowds of people that used to line the courts waiting to get next... and I remember Shawn and his older brothers, Patrick and Ryan, and how they were always familiar faces I looked forward to seeing there. Besides the fact that your team would be lucky to have picked up any of the 3 of them, one thing that sticks out in my head about Shawn and his brothers was how close they were. True family and true friends. There is obviously far more to who Shawn was than this, but it's what I like to remember.

Shawn Nassaney (born July 7, 1976) died on September 11, 2001. He was aboard United Airlines Flight 175, which crashed into the World Trade Center South Tower. Shawn was traveling to Hawaii with his girlfriend Lynn Goodchild.

One would think that it gets easier, but truthfully it only gets harder. Even with faith that it is temporary (in time), it is so difficult to walk away from the place where everything in your heart resides... with the unfortunate exception of your career.
Home.

However, within that difficulty, you tend to find the importance and distracting solace of routine. A routine of work ethic, responsibilities, goals, habits, discipline… things to snap you out of looking at life with a perspective of longing, and force you to look at life with the perspective of now.

Regrettably, as hard as you try to keep your yourself in that mindset, like with everyone, sometimes moments of weakness, frustration and impatience can get the best of you. Causing you to lose sight of fully appreciating life at hand. I know in my case, even sometimes causing you to wonder who will ultimately win over, the strong person who keeps driving forward with belief in the bigger picture… or the person we all have the ability to become when we sit still long enough to realize how exhausted we really are.

In those times I have been lucky enough to have family, friends, and loved ones to bring me back. To remind me that where we are in life, good or bad, is no more than a stepping stone. A chapter. On a much grander time-line (hopefully) than just the day to day. Understanding and excepting that, allows you to take a deep breath and find peace. Allows you step back and be able to enjoy every moment of the life in front of you for what it's worth. The way it should be.
Easier to grasp at times than it is at others?
Absolutely.

Yesterday I found some much needed grounding in a couple assignments that put me right back to work after an amazing vacation, having lunch with a great friend, 2 hours of jiu-jitsu, and video chatting with the lion.

It’s not the beach, but not a bad day at all if you ask me.
